De Jong's time with Barcelona has been nothing short of a rollercoaster after having joined the Catalan giants from Ajax following his breakout 2018/19 season with the Eredivisie side. While the Dutchman has shown a lot of promise at times, his lack of consistency along with the massive wages he holds, thanks to disgraced former president Josep Maria Bartomeu, the Blaugrana have shown interest in parting ways with the midfielder. Liverpool are said to be interested in signing De Jong in the summer, however, the 27-year-old has now expressed his desire for the future.

De Jong, himself, had been unsure about his future with Barcelona under Xavi Hernandez as he lacked playing time and form. However, after a rocky start under Hansi Flick, the Dutchman has regained form and is slowly becoming a starter yet again. As such, Mundo Deportivo have reportedly been told by De Jong's entourage that the 27-year-old wants to continue with Barcelona beyond his current contract.
DID YOU KNOW?
De Jong currently has a contract with Barcelona that runs until the summer of 2026 and as per Mundo Deportivo's report, despite his willingness to stay put in the Catalan capital, De Jong does not want to renew immediately and would prefer to wait until March/April before opening talks over an extension. The report also adds that the economic side of the deal is not as important to the Dutchman as he wants a good sporting project, which he sees in Flick.

Barcelona are of the same opinion as De Jong in the sense that they want to sign a new deal but do not want to jump into contract talks immediately but wait to see his form in the latter parts of the season under Flick. The Catalan side are in action later today when they take on Rayo Vallecano at Estadi Olympic knowing that a win would take them top of the La Liga standings.
