Jermaine Jenas believes that Manchester City attacker Raheem Sterling should have been sent off during their clash with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, per Match of the Day 2 via Football.London.
What’s he said?
The England international was booked in the first-half for a dangerous-looking tackle on Dele Alli, though replays showed that the challenge could have inflicted serious injury on his international team-mate.
VAR reviewed the challenge but chose to stick with referee Mike Dean’s initial decision.
Jenas, however, thinks that he should have been shown a red card, comparing the challenge to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s tackle on Crystal Palace’s Max Meyer, with the Arsenal forward sent off after a VAR review. The pundit, of course, played for Spurs between 2005 and 2013.
He said: “I thought he was fortunate (to stay on) and that is based on previous challenges that we have seen given by VAR.
“He’s late, he’s high, I don’t see how it’s any different to the Aubameyang challenge, it’s dangerous.
“What I would say on this, I think both referees got the decision right. With Aubameyang the red card was upgraded, the referee originally gave a yellow card.
“Here, I think Mike Dean gets it right as well but based on VAR you have to say with the decisions that have been given, I was surprised to see Raheem Sterling stay on the pitch.”
No clues whatsoever: Which seasons do these iconic Spurs images belong to?
Lucky all over
City were fortunate to end the game with Sterling on the pitch.
After his tackle on Alli, Spurs conceded a penalty following Serge Aurier’s challenge on Sergio Aguero; Hugo Lloris saved Ilkay Gundogan’s spot-kick but Sterling reached the rebound, only to go down under the challenge of the Frenchman.
However, VAR reviewed that too and did not find enough evidence to award a second penalty. As a result, he should probably have been shown a second yellow card for a dive.
As it was, City were reduced to ten men after Oleksandr Zinchenko, who was shown two yellow cards, the second coming after a tactical foul on Harry Winks.
Pep Guardiola’s side subsequently conceded twice, with Steven Bergwijn and Son Heung-Min both on the scoresheet, and lost the game.
They remain fortunate to have ended the game with ten players.
